It doesn't take a lot to give a little
That statement was embodied in our very first Goodwill Project: Dearest Dessert. Dearest Dessert prompts our goodwill ambassadors to connect with the children of schools, orphanages, and institutions and find out one thing: their dearest dessert. Our ambassadors find funds or sponsors to bring these children their sweets.
The first Dearest Dessert was executed at the Mysuru Government School for the Deaf and Dumb. With the permission of the school’s president Udayshankar Sir, our ambassadors Kishen Sargur and Arjun Sargur joined forces with sponsors Sunil Ramu and Sujatha Naren to prepare the food for the schoolchildren. Walking into the school, we were greeted with the intrigued faces of a few kids. However, most of them were in their classes for the day. Classes are taught fully in sign language, with all the teachers being fluent. To teach language, the teachers show pictures, write down the corresponding word on a blackboard, and demonstrate the corresponding sign to the students. We entered a room and spoke with President Udayshankar, where we found out how many students and staff there were: sixty.
Thanks to our amazing sponsors for this execution of Dearest Dessert, we were able to bring together the different parts of our plate. The dearest dessert of this school was cake, pound cake to be specific. With the help of our sponsors, ambassadors, and staff at the school we assembled the plates of pound cake, vegetable pastry, a biscuit, and juice. Our ambassadors and the school staff passed them out through the students, each one smiling as they received their treat. As I handed out food, many children even offered me a handshake. Every smile, every handshake, brought out a surge of pride, a wave of happiness.
That is when I realized the power of giving a little. It not only touches the lives of children, but also one’s own. The happiness of giving is a warm touch to the soul that cannot be put into words, it must be experienced. That warmth filled me as I sat and drank juice with the kids, that warmth filled me as we took pictures afterwards. For the rest of my life I will remember that moment, the moment that forms the base of this organization. Little Goodwill is dedicated to giving high schoolers around the world the moment of experiencing the joy of giving. It doesn’t have to be a huge endeavor, it doesn’t have to change someone’s life. But remember that your contribution makes a bigger difference than you think. After all, it doesn’t take a lot to give a little.
